The gallbladder aids the body in digestion and acts as a storage for bile. Gallbladder disease is an umbrella term for several types of conditions – most of which are related to stones causing a blockage in the system. Gallstones or cholelithiasis, cholecystitis and bile duct stones are just a few of the more common gallbladder diagnoses. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, gas, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. In some cases when the gallbladder is not functioning normally, surgical removal of the organ is necessary. Luckily, this procedure can often be performed laparoscopically as an outpatient procedure and requires little downtime.
