Heart failure affects more than six million people in the United States and is the leading cause of hospitalization for those older than 65. Join Virginia Heart cardiologists
Timothy Welch, MD, and
Hazim El-Haddad, MD, for an interactive discussion about how cardiologists manage heart failure and when it is time to consult with an advanced heart failure specialist.
As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. El-Haddad uses leading-edge, minimally invasive therapies to treat heart disease and specializes in valvular heart disease. Dr. Welch specializes in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
Why it matters: One in five people will have heart failure in their lifetime. A diagnosis of advanced heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure or CHF, indicates heart disease that has progressed to a point where traditional therapies and symptom management are no longer working. Over time, the heart becomes enlarged, and its tissue becomes damaged. Many factors contribute to heart failure, including valvular or structural heart disease, which makes the heart work harder to pump blood, causing the heart muscle to weaken or enlarge.
The
Heart Failure and Advanced Therapies Program at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular is Northern Virginia’s only dedicated heart failure program.
