Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., who typically develop the condition around the time of menopause. Hormonal changes that occur around menopause contribute to many factors that raise the risk of heart disease. These include an increase in blood pressure, a decrease in levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, changes in the way the body processes sugar, and stiffening or weakening of blood vessels.

Yet they are often largely unaware of the symptoms and risks associated with heart disease in women, which is more likely to kill them than all forms of cancer combined. Early detection and treatment, including lifestyle changes, medication and hormone therapy in some cases, can make a big difference in reducing mortality and improving quality of life.
